The enduring appeal of unlacquered brass in luxury hardware

The most beautiful interiors are never static. Materials for any prestige project are chosen not only for their immediate appearance, but also for how they perform over time, ageing gracefully and enriching the space. Unlacquered brass is a favourite of architects, interior designers and discerning homeowners for precisely this reason. From door handles to cupboard knobs, it offers a depth and authenticity few other finishes can rival.

What is unlacquered brass?

Unlacquered brass hardware is left unsealed after the piece is manufactured. Unlike lacquered brass, which is given a coat of clear, protective lacquer to maintain the finish for an extended period, unlacquered brass will react to oxygen, moisture and the oils in our hands by oxidising. It will gradually, gracefully, change in appearance. This is why unlacquered brass is known as a ‘living’ finish. What is important to recognise is that the ageing process is not a flaw. Specifying unlacquered brass means accepting change as part of the design intent; it is not something that needs correcting.

A ‘living’ finish

Brand new unlacquered brass will be bright and shiny but, over time, the original, mirror-like finish will slowly fade, and the colour will become richer and warmer. The exact process is unpredictable – it will depend on where the hardware is installed and how much it is handled. Areas you touch the most may lighten and take on a soft sheen, while less frequently handled surfaces may darken, perhaps with occasional variation. This will most likely take months or maybe even years, but eventually a delightful patina will develop. It is subtle, and highly individual – no two pieces will age in the same way, bringing unique character to even the most minimal of interiors.

Why choose unlacquered brass?

Unlacquered brass hardware has an enduring appeal that reflects its sophistication, timelessness and unique character. Compared to other finishes which have been engineered to remain unchanged, unlacquered brass celebrates imperfection and the idea of evolution over time. Although a classic finish, it works equally well in period and modern interiors, introducing warmth, tactility and a sense of honest durability to the overall scheme. And, much like the way in which the wear and softness of a favourite pair of jeans demonstrate how you’ve worn and loved them over the years, the gentle patina developed by unlacquered brass door knobs and handles helps convey the individual story of how you live in and use a space.

What are the other ‘living’ finishes?

At Henry Blake Hardware we offer several choices of ‘living’ finishes. If you are looking for an alternative to unlacquered brass, consider dark and coppered bronze, which offer a rich, aged and opulent appearance, or antique nickel for a timelessly traditional warm, silver tone.

How to care for unlacquered brass

If you are happy to observe and enjoy your unlacquered brass hardware as it matures and develops its rich patina, you may feel you don’t need to intervene at all. If, however, you prefer a brighter, shinier finish, by all means polish it (using a good quality polish or cream according to the instructions) as and when you wish.

We recommend cleaning with a soft, dry cloth, without the use of any cleaning abrasives (which may strip away the patina). Applying a coat of beeswax occasionally will help enhance the beauty of this long-lasting, authentic product.
